BEHIND THE SCORE - POPEYE’S REVENGE

Scoring Popeye was such an incredible experience. Will, the director, had some amazing ideas and prompts that really got me thinking. We wanted to pay homage to those classic 80s slashers at times but also create something unique that would stand out. When I approach a score, it’s always about finding the right balance between light and shade. Where can I bring the intensity up, and where do I need to pull back? Where do we let the tension just sit and hold? For Popeye, this approach meant using a lot of textures

With Popeye’s anchor being such a key element, both visually and in the sound design, I thought it would be great to mirror that in the music. We leaned heavily into metallic textures—bowed, brushed, and scratched cymbals. These sounds were perfect for creating unease in those tense moments, complementing the amazing ambiences the sound design team crafted.

Another big part of the score was creating clear motifs for the characters. For Popeye, we came up with this haunting, manipulated 'Yo-Ho' vocal motif. I recorded it myself and then ran it through a bunch of processing to make it really eerie. It pops up in those key moments where Popeye is getting stuck in.

We used a lot of tempo changes and time signature shifts. In one sequence, we go from 4/4 to 7/8, 5/4, 3/4, 5/8, and back to 7/4. Just when you think it’s settled, it shifts again. This keeps the energy alive and the tension high.

Towards the end of the film, we wanted to shift gears completely. You know those classic 80s slasher endings where you think it’s going to be okay? We leaned into that vibe. Using synths, a piano melody, and strings, we created something melodic and nostalgic. It’s such a contrast to the rest of the score, and I think it really lands emotionally.

This score was a true collaboration. Will’s creative prompts, the sound design team’s incredible work, and the freedom to experiment all came together to create something I’m really proud of. From the metallic textures to the rhythmic chaos and the contrasting motifs, every element was designed to immerse you in Popeye’s world.
