SPLINTERED: CELLO

A familiar instrument, fractured into something else.

SPLINTERED: CELLO explores the space between performance and deterioration. Built from intimate recordings, extended techniques, and aggressive processing, it transforms one of the most expressive acoustic instruments into a source of texture, tension, and instability.

The warmth and emotion of the cello remain, but they exist alongside grain, distortion, bow noise, mechanical resonance, and moments that feel on the edge of collapse.

Neither a traditional cello library nor pure sound design tool, SPLINTERED: CELLO occupies the territory between the two.

The instrument beneath the instrument

Every recording begins with a cello, but rarely in a conventional way.

Performances focus on the sounds that normally sit behind the notes: bow pressure, bridge resonance, harmonic instability, body percussion, and the physical interaction between player and instrument. These details are then layered, manipulated, and expanded into entirely new sonic territory.

The result is a library filled with character, imperfection, and movement.

The Cello Panel

The foundation of the instrument.

Long evolving textures explore bridge bowing, harmonics, tailpiece performance, and extended techniques that reveal the cello’s more fragile and unpredictable side.

Alongside these are a collection of shorts, including traditional pizzicato, bridge strikes, harmonics, and percussive articulations that provide both rhythmic detail and tonal tension.

The FX Panel

A collection of cinematic gestures designed to add impact, movement, and drama.

Hits capture forceful impacts against the cello body and strings. Bends introduce descending pitch gestures and collapsing textures. Risers build anticipation through evolving acoustic performances, while Whooshes transform raw cello recordings into sweeping transitions and movement effects.

Designed for scoring, trailers, and sound design, these elements extend the instrument beyond traditional performance.

The Scapes Panel

Where the cello begins to disappear.

Scapes explores the most abstract side of the library through manipulated recordings, unstable drones, evolving textures, and fragmented performances.

Bridge bowing becomes dense atmospheric layers. Random phrases emerge and disappear. Pitch slides drift unpredictably. Rhythmic body taps and ricochet bow techniques create movement and tension, while processed long tones evolve into entirely new sound worlds.

The result is a collection of sounds that feel organic, yet difficult to place.

Built for modern scoring

SPLINTERED: CELLO was designed for composers and sound designers working between genres.

Film. Television. Games. Ambient music. Experimental composition.

It provides the emotional character of an acoustic instrument while offering the unpredictability and depth of modern sound design.
